Hunter Canyon Hike, Moab, Utah

Mike and I found ourselves in Moab looking to do a moderate hike with canyon views. We’ve driven past the trailhead numerous times and finally decided to check out the hike down Hunter Canyon.

We parked at the trailhead and started hiking up canyon. I was surprised the creek was running as much as it was, considering what a dry winter we had. It was a very pleasant surprise as it made the canyon even more beautiful, having the big red sandstone walls looming overhead, with a vibrant green oasis growing around the creek. About 0.5 miles from the trailhead, we got views of Hunter Arch, which was quite impressive.

Another mile in, we came upon some very large alcoves/caves that were quite neat to look at. We continued along the trail and at 1.9 miles (our turnaround point), we got views of Curious Arch. It was another cool arch, but it was quite far away. There was no way to get better views of the arch as the canyon that leads to the arch ends in a very large dry fall and is impassable. We took a snack break at this point and then headed back to the trailhead the same way we came in.

Overall, it was a wonderful outing in a beautiful canyon.

Total stats: 3.9 miles, 450 ft of elevation gain
